The federal government of Australia has introduced its new visa program to attract more immigrants to rural areas.
Under the new visa scheme, immigrants to Australia will have to spend at least 3-years in regional areas before applying for permanent residency.
But if migrants can become part of a regional community, it opens the door for overseas employees from a wider range of occupations than before like; real estate agents, actors, historians, call center managers, etc.
Australian Government is expecting that under the new visa scheme, the population growth will increase in areas where it has declined.
The minister for immigration, David Coleman has told that “by requiring migrants to live and work in regional areas for three years before they can get permanent residency, we are encouraging them to put down roots and settle in these areas long term.”
“That is what our smaller cities and regional communities need.”
Data issued by the Australian Bureau of Statistics says that 79% of population growth in 2017-18 occurred in the capital cities of Australia.
Immigrants have a very low chance of living in a regional area after the needed years, James Raymer from Australian National University who has analyzed 40 years of immigration data, stated.
He explained, “most migrants will leave within a five-year period – over half, if not 70 percent – and if they’re going to stay in Australia they’re going to go to one of the big cities, probably Sydney or Melbourne,”
“What we actually see in the data, the chances of them leaving remote and regional areas has been increasing for a lot of the newer migrant groups,” said Raymer.
