Canada published new information relating how to get a Canada Study Permit for the fall 2020 academic year. The government of Canada announced a new two-step process to study in Canada to support international students who want to obtain a high-quality education in Canada.

The coronavirus pandemic explosion has made it hard for international students to acquire the required documents for a Canadian study permit. There are also Canada travel restrictions for many international students. Only those students are exempted from the travel restrictions if their study permits were granted before the evening of 18th March. Moreover, the Canadian border officers may reject entry to exempted international students if their study course can be done online.

Still, international students need to be in Canada to grasp more benefits of their study program. But if their study programs are online and they can study from home, this can make traveling to Canada “optional”.

Considering the above, IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada) is establishing a new two-step approval process. This two-step approval process will authorize international students to begin their semester online without finalizing the study permit. The immigration department of Canada released new instructions for its officers on how to continue with the temporary changes.

Students who want to seize the benefit of the new two-step process to study in Canada need to apply for their study permit until September 15.

How to obtain a Canada Study Permit for fall 2020?
The initial phase is the same as the regular study-permit process. International students need to submit:

  • A letter of acceptance
  • A certificate d’acceptation du Québec (for Quebec students only)
  • Proof that shows enough financial means
  • Proof that they will leave Canada when they no more have legal temporary or permanent status or any family connections to Canada

Immigration officers will evaluate these applications and then issue pre-approval at their prudence. International students then can start their study program.

To obtain the full study permit, and after all, to enable to travel to Canada, international students will need to provide:

  • Biometrics
  • Security-Police certificates
  • Immigration medical examination

Note: Check whether you are eligible to study in Canada or not.

What are the standard requirements for Student Direct Stream?
Only those international students who are applying under the SDS (Student Direct Stream) are qualified for the accelerated study-permit program, but they need to submit a full application. Besides, they need to apply under the standard process or wait unless they are capable of providing all the required documents to be qualified for the SDS. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) also stated that there might be latency.

SDR aims to process study permits within 20 days. At this time, international students are eligible if they are from any of the following countries.

Online study is now acceptable if you want to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit
The full study permit is required if students want to complete their study program in Canada, and after graduation apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) to work in Canada. The PGWP enables international students to obtain Canadian work experience.

In the past, IRCC changed the qualifying requirements for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) as specified learning institutions changed their in-class study programs to online.

The international students will now be able to complete half of their study program online, and they can remain eligible to apply for the work permit.
