Canada started the new year by issuing invitations to Express Entry applicants who have provincial nominations on January 6. The candidates who had at least 813 scores are invited by Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
For all the applicants who have obtained nominations from an Express Entry-aligned Provincial Nominee Program (PNPs), 600 points will be added to their overall score, for this reason, the score requirement is quite high in contrast to other rounds of invitation.
The 250 invited applicants can now legally apply for Canadian PR (permanent residence).
Canada Express Entry is the application management system for the three following federal immigration programs.
Federal Skilled Worker Program
Federal Skilled Trades Program
All the candidates under these programs, including some PNPs, are given a score based on the CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System). These points are assigned on the basis of the candidate’s human capital factors such as age, education, work experience, and language proficiency in English or French.
Moreover, Express Entry applicants do not need any experience in Canada, or even an employment offer, though it may give them additional points.
All the top-scoring applicants get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence through regular Express Entry (EE) rounds of invitation. After that, Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will make a final decision and send them a Confirmation of Canadian PR (permanent residence) if their application is successful.
The final step for accepted permanent residents is to create their landing in Canada and apply for their Canadian PR card. At this moment, they legally immigrated to Canada, and can finally apply for citizenship.
The CRS cutoff scores slightly dropped at the end of 2020. It may be because IRCC initiated keeping bigger draws, it means more of the highest-scoring applicants were invited from the Express Entry pool.
In case of a connection between candidates, IRCC (Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada) applies the tie-breaking rule. In the newest draw, applicants who had a CRS score of 469 or more, required to have provided their Express Entry profile before November 2, 2020, to get an invitation.
Moreover, 2020 was a unparalleled year for Canada Express Entry. In the end, around 108,350 ITAs were issued to Express Entry candidates. 2021 is hoped to be an even greater year, as Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada has elevated immigration objectives to make up for the decreased number of recent permanent residents accepted to Canada last year.
Next year, Canada is expected to welcome about 401,000 new immigrants and among them, 108,500 are granted to come through an Express Entry program and these targets will go up during the coming three years, increasing to 110,500 in 2022 and 113,750 in 2023.
